A Different Life Style

Living Abroad

It was in 2009 when my parents told me that our family (my parents, my brother and I) was going to a different country so that my father could fulfill a doctorate.

So two months later we boarded a plane and in a few hours I found myself in Sydney, Australia. I lived there for a year and the things that impacted me the most were the different cultures that the big city was packed with, I got to meet people from all over the world and got to learn about their ethnic lifestyle; some people were from South America like me, but others from Asian countries like China, Vietnam, Japan, India, Russia, Thailand, some Europeans too and obviously there were Australians. Another thing I remember from the country is the stunning beaches in the coast of the city, you could go to the beach during lunch break or after school, and it was very relaxing.

So when the year was up we had to go to yet another country, a few planes and hours later I was in Lethbridge, Canada. Now this is a small town near the Rocky Mountains. It snows for 9 months of the year. I got to experience the famous “White Christmas”. The lowest temperature we got was -45ºC. The things I liked the most about this country were that health and the hospitals were public and had an excellent service. School was also public and probably better than the best private school in Chile. Even though it was a small town, there were plenty of things to do. I lived in this town for three years.

A week before the three years were up, we decided that it would be fun to do a road trip through the United States; we started up in Montana and ended in California. I visited four states in one day; I also got to go to Yellowstone National Park, The Grand Canyon, Las Vegas and Los Angeles.

So to conclude I’d like to say that if you’re planning to go in exchange to a different country, or when you’re older go on a working holiday or fulfill a postgrad, then I want you to know that there’s a whole different world out there waiting for you to explore it.
