How good is the food labeling law?
In Chile a new law to inform people the amount of saturated fat, calories, sugar and sodium was applied.
The law wants to promote the right of people to know the specifications of what they are eating.
In fact, this system -although it says that it is unique in the world- that’s not totally true because in United Kingdom exists a “traffic light” system; this basically is to warn about the risks of food components and, knowing that… I ask you: how original is the Chilean law?
The characteristics that food requires to be labeled in energy limit is 275 Kcal, in sodium is 400 mg, in saturated fats is 4 g, and the food that do not comply with these characteristics will not receive labels.
I think this law is not such a bad idea if it had been handled in a better way because the way that the food is labeled, is visually bad in my opinion.
But I sincerely believe that labels appearance could not be better as it should be appealing to people so they pay more attention next time the buy something.
