Man into woman

Lili Elbe was born in 1882 in Denmark as Einar Mogens Wegener. At age 22, while studying at the Copenhagen art school, he married his companion Gerda. Lili specializes in landscape paintings and Gerda independently worked with illustrated books and fashion magazines.

According to Gerda account, while Einar replaces a model who had not presented for a painting, he realizes that actually felt much better with stockings and heels. Gerda and Einer slowly entered a "game" where Einar was Lili, Einar's cousin. They went to parties together and spent a good time, but soon Einar would realize that he had actually been born in the wrong body.

Incredibly, Gerda supports the decision of Einar (now Lili) and continued together, they moved to Paris in 1912, the most liberal city at the time.

Many say that Lili was an intersexual, because she showed female signs before being operated. The biggest decision of his life was maked in 1930, at 47 years old he removed his genitals. Then she divorced Gerda, leave the paint because that's "Einar thing" and has a stable relationship with a French painter. Everything was going good, but in the next operation she rejects transplant ovaries. Everything complicated, and must be operated several times and causing his death in 1931 because her immune system rejects a uterus transplant, her dream always was to become pregnant.

Something very interesting is that Lili manages to get passport with his new identity, naming Elbe like her last like a river of Dresde, where Lili was born. Although she only lived 14 months, she expresses to her sister through a letter "maybe didn´t was so long, but I had a full and happy life."

His story has been told a lot of times, the first book "Man into Woman" in 1933, 2001 with the book "The Danish Girl" and this is brought to the big screen 2015, making its history of struggle known around the world.
